Under the Hood: Continuous Ink System (CIS) for HP 564 / 920

These are frequently asked questions from our customers:

1) What CIS do you recommend? Which model do you use?
2) Should I use pigment or dye ink with HP 564 / 920 cartridges?
3) What about chips, what kind of chip do I need to buy?
4) What is the difference between BCH Standard and Premium-grade ink?
5) How much can I print with a CIS?
6) What is the quality of your ink?

I would like to bring you to our lab and show you what we use. Although we sell many top of the line CIS units, our lab unit is not fancy looking, as the French would say “a shoe repairman’s son wears the worst shoes on earth”. I want to demonstrate that even the most basic CIS model will meet your printing needs and is a good fit for small business and beyond.

How to Remove Air from DIY CIS Cartridges

Priming is important for making a successful DIY CIS. Most DIY tools come with a generic cartridge clip. However, because there are many variations of cartridges, you may not get the clip that fits. Today we show a poor man’s solution to prime any DIY CIS cartridge without using any cartridge clips.

How to Unclog a Printhead

Some common problems in printers are indicative of print head clogging.  If you are experiencing a decrease in print quality, missing lines or blank pages while trying to print, this may be the issue.  There are many tips on the internet about unclogging the print head.  Such tips range from helpful to detrimental for the printer.  Today, I describe the unclogging process from an ink supplier’s perspective and hope it will be helpful to household users.

The mechanics behind clogging are simple.  The print head is like a water tank with a very tiny opening.  During printing, the machine squeezes out microscopic (picoliter) ink droplets.  The ink is designed to dry fast so as not to smudge.

These are some possible reasons for clogging:

  • If the print head is exposed to the air for a long period of time, ink can dry up and block the small opening.
  • Foreign objects (ink impurity or dust) can block the opening.  Some internet instructions advise users to wipe clean the print head with tissues or paper towels, which may introduce blockage to the print head.
  • An air bubble can temporarily block the opening.  Air is naturally dissolved in the ink.
    • Fluctuation of room temperature will change the air concentration and thus form air bubbles.
    • Changing cartridges also introduces air into the system.  (*Note: This is why you should do a print head-cleaning cycle after installing a new cartridge).
  • It may not be a blockage.  There are processes that can permanently damage the nozzle; the print head may be scratched and damaged, the print head may have over-heated during a long printing process, or a paper jam may have caused the issue.

How much ink is in HP 564, 920, 932, 933, 950 XL cartridges?

HP 564 CartridgeYou may have wondered about regular vs XL cartridges if you own an HP printer.  So which cartridge should you use and is there a way to save money by choosing smartly? HP does not give out their ink volumes for all cartridges.  Instead, they use a "estimted yield",  As an example, the black HP 564 is estimated to yield 250  standard pages. If you refill a cartridge, you may scratch your head and wonder how much ink to put in each cartridge.  Here is a list of ink volume for some popular HP cartridges.  These are the results from new HP OEM cartridges tested by BCH Technologies and results may vary.

How Can I Reset an HP's Cartridge Ink Level to Full?

How Can I Reset an HP's Cartridge Ink Level to Full?

Most HP Inkjet cartridges come with embedded chips, such as the older model 564, 920, or newer 932, 933, 950, 951. The chips have two primary functions. One function is to count the number of pages printed and prevent the printer from running out of ink. A printer has no “ink gauge” or “ink sensor,” even for advanced models like 6700, 8610, or 8620. The printer estimates the ink level by counting printed pages. Then, the chip saves the information, and an estimation is made. If you transfer the cartridge into a second printer, the printer will estimate the same ink level.

Will a Refilled Cartridge or CIS System Void My Printer Warranty?

Will a Refilled Cartridge or CIS System Void My Printer Warranty? In today’s fast-paced world in technology and entertainment, the trend toward high-quality printing is growing astronomically. With the high cost of original manufacture’s ink cartridges (OEM), home-refill cartridges evolved. Another mode of inexpensive ink manufacturing by third-party companies is the Continuous Ink Supply (CIS) System. This method feeds ink directly into the cartridge, eliminating the need for changing cartridges. The customer can save 30-40% by refilling old cartridges, and a BCH CIS System saves 80-90% in printing expense! Printer manufacturers do not recommend the use of these alternative ink solutions and even condemn them as unreliable and potentially damaging to the printer. It could be true for some inferior systems, but a well-designed CIS system can improve printer performance by eliminating air ingress, maintaining constant pressure and reducing the need of print head cleaning.
